GIL BASKETBALL ACADEMY DAY
A HISTORIC HONOR FOR GBA
Gil Basketball Academy celebrated its 18th anniversary with an extraordinary honor: the County of Monterey Board of Supervisors officially proclaimed August 29, 2026, as “Gil Basketball Academy Day” throughout Monterey County.
The proclamation recognizes 18 years of GBA mentoring and developing young athletes throughout the county through athletics, leadership, teamwork and community engagement.
In its official resolution, the County recognized Gil Basketball Academy for giving young athletes opportunities to build confidence, discipline, sportsmanship and lasting life skills both on and off the basketball court. The resolution also acknowledged GBA's role in strengthening families through encouragement, inclusion, mentorship and personal growth, and its continued service as a community resource inspiring young people to pursue excellence, healthy lifestyles, education and leadership.
For Gil Basketball Academy, the recognition represents far more than an anniversary milestone. It honors the thousands of moments that have made up the past 18 years — practices, games, victories, challenges, friendships, lessons learned and young athletes growing into confident young adults.
The resolution was presented as GBA gathered with athletes, families, alumni and supporters at Toro Park in Salinas to celebrate its 18th anniversary and the community that has made the organization what it is today.
“Gil Basketball Academy Day” belongs to the entire GBA family. It belongs to every athlete who stepped onto the court, every parent who placed their trust in the program, every coach and mentor who invested in a young person, and every supporter who believed in GBA's mission.
After 18 years, GBA remains committed to what has always mattered most: using basketball as a vehicle to mentor young people, build character, strengthen families and create opportunities for the next generation.
August 29 will now hold a very special place in GBA history — officially recognized throughout Monterey County as Gil Basketball Academy Day.
